A massive sinkhole that appeared at a popular Melbourne sporting ground earlier this year has been linked to a controversial pressure test conducted by tunnel workers. The eight-metre hole, which appeared at AJ Burkitt Oval in Heidelberg, near one of Victoria's largest tunnel infrastructure projects, caused the closure of the sporting ground and sparked concern among locals and authorities alike. But here's where it gets controversial... authorities admit that the test, performed by North East Link tunnel workers, destabilised the ground and caused the sinkhole to open. Paul Roth, Interim CEO of VIDA Roads, a government body tasked with projects including the North East Link and West Gate Tunnel, claimed the test 'should not have taken place'. He added that the incident could have been prevented, and expressed disappointment and frustration over the situation. Despite the controversy, Mr Roth assured the public that the incident would not cause any delays or additional costs to the $26 billion tunnel project. The government has begun repairing the oval by filling the 8-metre hole with concrete, and works to re-turf the affected ground are expected to be completed by March. The incident has raised questions about the safety and responsibility of construction projects, and WorkSafe is continuing to monitor the situation.
