A dramatic finish in Dubai saw Nacho Elvira emerge victorious, claiming his third European Tour title amidst the chaos of the final hole.
The Unlikely Champion
Nacho Elvira, ranked 190th in the world, seized the opportunity as Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry faltered on the 18th hole. While the Ryder Cup stars struggled, Elvira kept his cool and made a stress-free par, securing the win with a round of 69.
But here's where it gets controversial...
Lowry, who had been leading moments earlier, found himself in a greenside bunker from the middle of the fairway and then, unfortunately, in the water. A double-bogey 6 followed, leaving him two strokes behind.
And this is the part most people miss...
McIlroy, who was just one shot behind Lowry at the 18th tee, also encountered trouble. His drive veered right into the rough, and his approach landed in the bunker. Despite his best efforts, he couldn't recover, and both he and Lowry ended up tied for third.
Daniel Hillier of New Zealand shot an impressive 65, finishing alone in second place at 9 under.
Elvira, with his family celebrating alongside him, expressed his joy: "It means the world. If you had told me on Tuesday that I'd be winning this, I'd never have believed you."
Lowry, seeking his first European Tour title since 2022 and a solo win since 2024, couldn't quite seal the deal.
Elvira started the final round in the lead and held a comfortable three-shot advantage after a birdie at the 7th. However, back-to-back bogeys at the 8th threatened his position. But he saved par at the par-5 10th, keeping him in contention with Lowry, McIlroy, and a host of other challengers.
An hour before the finish, the lead was shared by five players: Hillier, McIlroy, Lowry, Marcus Armitage, and Elvira. Lowry's 30-footer birdie at the 15th gave him the solo lead, but he couldn't maintain it.
