A thrilling victory unfolded as the Michigan Tech Huskies women's basketball team triumphed over Northwood in a high-scoring showdown, finishing non-conference play on a high note. This game was a rollercoaster of emotions, showcasing the Huskies' resilience and determination.
The Huskies secured an 89-87 victory on Friday at the SDC Gym, a testament to their offensive prowess. Five players reached double figures, with Ella Mason leading the charge, achieving a career-high 25 points. This win improved Tech's overall record to 8-2 and marked a 6-2 finish in non-conference games. It was also the first time this season that Tech scored 80 points, a clear sign of their offensive capabilities.
The game was a tough battle, as Northwood put up a strong fight. Coach Sam Clayton acknowledged Northwood's quality, stating, "Our team just responded every time they made a run." The fourth quarter brought a shift in momentum, with Northwood employing a zone defense and press that initially troubled the Huskies. But here's where the Huskies' grit shone through: they managed to make crucial plays when it mattered most, securing the win.
This victory is particularly significant as it was against a formidable opponent. Coach Clayton highlighted the importance of the win, emphasizing the team's confidence going into their next challenge against the number one team in the country.
The Huskies had a comfortable 12-point lead heading into the final quarter. However, Northwood's zone defense disrupted Tech's fast-paced game, allowing them to narrow the gap to just two points. The tension was palpable as Northwood's Maeve St. John attempted a game-tying three-pointer at the buzzer, which unfortunately rimmed out.
The Huskies' offensive explosion was evident from the start, with 30 points in the first quarter, leading 51-45 at halftime. They shot over 60 percent from the field and sunk six three-pointers. Northwood kept pace at the free-throw line, going 12-for-12 in the first half.
In the third quarter, the Huskies maintained their lead, outscoring the Timberwolves 22-16. Ella Mason continued her stellar performance, adding eight points.
Ella Mason's impressive performance included 9-for-17 from the floor, four three-pointers, and three free throws. This marked her third time this season scoring 20 points or more. Alyssa Wypych contributed 16 points, hitting all three of her three-point attempts. Kendall Standfest added 15 points, Soraya Timms scored 14, and Janie Tormanen finished with 12.
On the Northwood side, Maeve St. John led with 25 points, 10 of which came from free throws. Lea Holmes scored 17, and Lexie Bowers added 10.
The Huskies will now enjoy a holiday break before returning to action on January 1 and 3 at the SDC Gym, hosting Grand Valley State and Davenport.
